Shared by Adam • December 12, 2023

Hi there,

Our team has been hard at work improving the Bytespree product and fixing bugs. On Tuesday evening, we're releasing a minor update to all Bytespree customers to get everyone up to date with our fixes and minor enhancements.

Bug Fixes and Enhancements

  • In certain cases, syncs would cause dependent views of synced tables to not be recreated after syncs complete. We've addressed this.
  • A Snowflake database can now be deleted if it's the only database that exists.
  • Various small enhancements/tweaks in regards to the Snowflake implementation added last release.

Hi there,

On Sunday, October 31, 2023, we'll be shipping a brand-new release of Bytespree. You don't have to do anything; we'll handle the update for you.

Curious about what's changing? We've got a bunch of new features to share!

Data Lake

  • You can now drop and rename Foreign Schemas from the Database Manager.
  • You can now manually refresh a Foreign Schema from the Database Manager. This will automatically import any new tables or views that have been added to the public schema of the Foreign Database.
  • Foreign Databases created in the Database Manager can now be, optionally, made available to Studio Projects
  • When attempting to schedule a sync, if it intersects with the server's maintenance window, you will now be shown an error message and will need to choose a new schedule.
  • Servers undergoing maintenance will now be disabled when creating a new database.
  • Detailed information for views, including columns and dependent views, is now available via the Database Manager.
  • Databases in the Data Lake can now be filtered by connector. You can also filter by database name using the provided text box.
  • A column containing an insert timestamp can now be added when importing tables via the Database Manager.

Studio

  • Studio projects can now be filtered by Connector.
  • Any active sort expression will now be shown when opening the Custom Sort dialog and clearing the expression will remove the sort expression from the query
  • MSSQL publishers that overwrite a table now publish to a temporary table and only replace the existing table if publishing succeeds.
  • The commit history is now retained when renaming a view.

Other

  • Permissions are now restored on views when they are rebuilt during a sync.
  • The maintenance window of your server can now be seen and modified from the Servers tab of Bytespree Admin
  • A permission has been added that gives admins control over the roles that request access to databases.

Bytespree v3.2 Coming This Weekend!

Shared by Matt • May 24, 2023

Hi there,

On Sunday, May 28, 2023, we'll be shipping a brand-new release of Bytespree. You don't have to do anything; we'll handle the update for you.

As a result of this new release, Bytespree will be unavailable this Sunday from 9 AM EST until 12:00 PM EST. Syncs scheduled to run during the downtime may be delayed.

Curious about what's changing? We've got a bunch of new features to share!

Data Lake

  • An indicator is now shown on the database card in Data Lake when a connector update is available.
  • An indicator is now shown on the database card in Data Lake when a connector is scheduled to run manually.
  • You can now use the “Remove Schedules” button on the schedule tab to set all tables to sync manually. This process will be done without verifying the connector’s credentials and makes it possible to, effectively, disable syncs when credentials are invalid or out of date.
  • Emails will now be sent to database notificants and team admins when a connector adds columns to a table. The email will also notify you if we find fields that have been removed from the source; however, we will not drop these columns so that existing values can be preserved. Keep in mind that not all connectors support these features, so let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
  • Columns can now be added when using the “Replace” option of the “New Table” import tool; however, the new import must also contain all existing columns. If existing columns cannot be automatically mapped to the table, a tool to map fields to columns will be shown.

Studio

  • Estimated record counts are now clearly labeled as such.
  • Users can now enable “Developer Mode” via “Manage My Account”. When developer mode is enabled, more detailed error messages will be shown in Data Explorer if modifications made to joins, columns, filters, unions, and groups cause the underlying query to fail.
  • Some existing features, like custom columns and custom sort expressions, now require “Developer Mode” to be enabled to be used.
  • The interface for building unions has been altered so that the icons to remove or modify existing table unions are always visible.
  • Filtering by a tag will now update the URL in your browser, making it easier to add browser bookmarks for commonly used databases and projects.

Other

  • It’s finally back! The icon that shows your current running data jobs has returned, and it’s better and faster than before. Clicking on the “Running Jobs” icon not only shows you what’s running, but also recently completed jobs. Need to narrow things down? Try the search tool. Type in a table name, database name, connector name, or job type. Whatever you’re looking for, it can help you find it. We hope you find this much-improved feature as useful as we have while developing and testing it, and we cannot wait to hear your feedback!
  • When adding a new database server via a cloud provider, the server will now be disabled in all dropdowns until the cloud provider has informed us that it’s ready.
  • Additional performance and stability improvements have also been made to both Data Lake and Studio.

Is there a feature you’d like to see? Think you have found a bug? Use the chat in Bytespree to submit your feature requests or bug reports. Our team is working hard to make Bytespree better, and we’d love to have your feedback!

Snowflake Support Coming to Bytespree

Trent avatar
Shared by Trent • April 14, 2023

We have some exciting news to share with you! As your trusted data platform provider, we continuously strive to enhance our product offerings to meet your ever-evolving needs. We are proud to announce that a summer 2023 release will introduce support for Snowflake, in addition to our existing PostgreSQL support.

For those who may not be familiar, Snowflake is a cloud-based data platform that provides a fast, flexible, and scalable solution for data storage and analytics. It has gained immense popularity in recent years and is becoming a preferred choice for many organizations looking to manage large-scale data workloads.

As we work to integrate Snowflake support into our data lake platform, we want to inform you that our data analysis tool, Studio, will not immediately support analyzing databases within the data lake that use Snowflake. Our engineering team is actively working on this integration, and we will notify you as soon as Studio is compatible with Snowflake databases.

We understand the importance of providing the best tools for your data management and analytics needs. By introducing Snowflake support, we aim to provide you with more flexibility and choice in how you build and manage your data lake. We hope you are as excited as we are about this new addition to our platform.

Stay tuned for more updates on the release date and additional features in the coming weeks. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to our customer support team.

Bytespree v3.1 Coming Next Week!

Shared by Matt • March 24, 2023

Hi there,

On Sunday, March 26, 2023, we'll begin shipping a brand-new release of Bytespree. You don't have to do anything; we'll handle the update for you. Only a few teams will be updated this weekend; however, we will be rolling out updates to the remaining teams throughout the week. You will be notified when your team has been updated. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us.

Curious about what's changing? We've got lots of new features to share with you!

Data Lake

  • We now drop and recreate dependent views automatically when a view is updated in Data Lake
  • When adding or changing a server, IP addresses are added by adding “IP Groups”. With IP Groups, in addition to adding the IP addresses and netmasks allowed to access your server, you may also enter notes to help you keep track of why the group was added.
  • The feature to download CA certificates for your server has been restored.
  • When updating a view, the original SQL entered by the user is now displayed instead of the SQL generated by PostgreSQL
  • The connector version is now tied to the database. When a connector is updated for your team, existing databases created for that connector will continue to use the previous version, and only new connector databases will use the latest version. Any existing database can be updated to the latest connector by opening “Manage Database Settings” and going to the advanced tab.

Studio

  • Table unions are now supported in Studio. Unions allow you to append results from one table or view to the results of another table or view. You can append as many tables as you'd like, and Studio will respect the overall sorting of the combined results.
  • SQL users can now be created for studio projects and will have access to read existing SQL objects in the project’s schema and to create new objects as well. Please note: views created via this SQL user may be viewed in Data Explorer, but the “Edit View” button will not be present and the view must be maintained using the SQL.

Other

  • You can now sign-up for a new Bytespree account using single-sign-on credentials.
  • Various bug fixes and performance improvements have been applied to all products
